How has Cinema United membership been impactful to you and/or your business?

Cinema United has been an invaluable platform for expanding my network with passionate, purpose-driven professionals committed to the growth and evolution of our industry.

The events are consistently insightful, offering relevant, timely content and clear calls to action that spark meaningful engagement. The updates are prompt and well-curated, and the diverse perspectives shared have become powerful inputs for internal discussions and long-term strategic planning.

I’m a strong advocate for the State of the Industry calls—they consistently deliver clarity, context, and connection in a way that helps us all move the business forward.

How did you get into the exhibition business?

My journey in this industry began in 1988, when I landed a student position at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. I had the incredible opportunity to manage the Union Cinema and Sandburg Flicks auditoriums on campus. It was true hands-on learning—I dove into every aspect of the business, from programming and operations to running projection. I even taught myself how to operate a reel-to-reel carbon arc projector system with manual changeovers.

It was an unforgettable experience that gave me both a technical foundation and a deep appreciation for the art of exhibition. But the real plot twist? It’s where I met my wife—the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Together, we’ve built a life filled with love, laughter, and two amazing daughters who continue to inspire me every day.

What excites me most is how dynamic our industry is—evolving week to week with fresh content, bold ideas, and new opportunities.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I have the privilege of collaborating with extraordinary people to entertain millions of equally remarkable guests. What excites me most is how dynamic our industry is—evolving week to week with fresh content, bold ideas, and new opportunities. It’s rare to be part of a business where the product makes headlines every weekend.

I value our partnerships with the studios and the shared mission we have: to bring joy, escapism, and unforgettable experiences to people. There’s something special about working in an industry that sparks immediate connection. Mentioning that I’m in the movie theatre business never fails to light up a conversation—everyone has an opinion, a favorite film, or a memory they want to share.

And engaging with our guests—true movie lovers—is always a highlight. Their energy and passion remind me every day why this work matters.

Can you share a particularly memorable moment or event from your time in the industry?

There are countless memories, but some stay with you forever.

Early in my career, I hired a young usher through a high school work program. He faced his share of challenges, but he had a genuine love for movies—that became our bridge. He quickly became a valued part of the team, and we grew close. His family was grateful that he’d found purpose, connection, and a sense of belonging.

Tragically, he became ill and passed away just a few years later. His father asked that he be buried in his uniform—a tuxedo—because the job had meant so much to him.

On the day of the funeral, I sat in the pew and looked around to see many of our team members there, dressed in their uniforms, paying tribute. That silent show of respect spoke volumes.

His father later wrote me a letter—one I still keep. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger.

Tell us about your favorite moviegoing experience of all time:

Some of my favorite memories aren’t just about the movies themselves—but the people I shared them with. Weekend movie nights were a tradition for my girlfriend and me—now my wife—and that ritual became the rhythm of our early relationship.

I remember holding my daughter during her very first film, The Barney Movie, tucked in the back row because she was worried it would be too loud. She didn’t know her dad was the GM at the time… and could’ve turned it down just for her.

I remember the last movie I saw with my mom before she passed. It wasn’t about the film—it was about the moment.

I started a holiday tradition of taking my kids and their cousins to the movies so the adults could host a grown-up Christmas party. What began with booster seats and juice boxes has now evolved into a full-grown crew—still showing up, still sharing the experience, now with their partners in tow.

These memories are more than nostalgic—they’re part of my story. And they remind me why this business matters.

Where do you see the future of exhibition heading, and what excites you about it?

I remain incredibly optimistic about the future of our industry and the powerful, shared experiences only the cinema can provide. We’ve just come through one of the most unprecedented periods in our history—one that has reshaped how people engage with content and where they choose to experience it.

We’re now operating in a new era, and with it comes a renewed opportunity to define the value of the theatrical experience. I’m bullish on the core truth: movies are simply better when experienced in a theatre—free of distractions, surrounded by others who came for the same reason—to laugh, gasp, and escape together. That shared energy is unmatched. And when you pair that with a premium viewing environment, plus elevated food, beverage, and treat options, we offer something streaming never will: connection.

I’m energized by the upcoming film slate and the creativity our studio partners continue to deliver—films that captivate audiences and give moviegoers a reason to return again and again.

What excites me even more is the evolution of what a theatre can be. With expanded offerings—from social spaces and dining to new attractions and experiences—we’re not just showing movies anymore. We’re building a destination. And the future looks bright.

What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the exhibition industry?

Advice for someone looking to break into the movie theatre business? Lean in, because this industry is both a calling and a ride.

Love the movies—but love people even more.

Movies may be the draw, but this business is built on people. Your team, your guests, your partners—success comes from understanding and valuing those relationships.

Be ready to roll up your sleeves.

Whether you’re starting as an usher, a manager, or in a corporate role, the most successful people in this industry have done a bit of everything. That hands-on experience builds empathy, insight, and long-term credibility.

Stay curious and adaptable.

The business evolves weekly—new films, new tech, new guest expectations. Embrace change as a constant. The more you can flex, the more value you’ll bring.

See every shift as showtime.

Every day is opening night for someone. Whether it’s a child’s first movie, a date night, or a family tradition—there’s magic in the moment. Bring pride and purpose to every experience you help create.

Find mentors, and be one.

Learn from people who’ve walked the path before you. And when you’ve earned your stripes, turn around and lift someone else up. This is a tight-knit industry built on shared experience.

And finally—have fun.

At the end of the day, we’re in the business of joy. Never lose sight of the fact that you get to be part of something that entertains, inspires, and connects millions of people.
